In The Silence Between, I engaged women in their 20s and 30s who define themselves as best friends and were drawn to participate in my record making. Intrinsically ambiguous, my relationship to each pair of friends fluctuated from outsider to third friend, witness to participant, leader to follower.
My contact sheets document our range of interaction – moments when I appear to be directing them, when they appear to be performing an image they want to project or when nothing visually accessible is happening. The pictures I was seeking fall outside of these categories. The were created during fleeting moments that transpired somewhere between conscious presentation and nothingness where our interactions produced displays of friendship and femininity.
